Where I’m From (Inspired By George Ella Lyon)

I am from freedom in revolution,

From the Peach state and musical soul.

I am from the 13 colonies under religious freedom.

Rights of laws, winning the war, it tasted like victory.

I am from the fight for justice

The tempo and play

Whose legends faces I remember

As if they were my own.

I am from the beat in my spirit and enjoyable dance,

From Mr. and Mrs.

I am from the Nightmare Factory and the

World of Wrestling,

From “go to your room!” and “ mi casa e tu casa!”

I am from the purple roses in my voice

With a rhythm when I sing

And ten songs I can sing myself.

I am from volleyball sets and team players,

Flips and tucks and splits and tricks.

From the friends I lost

To the besties I made,

Used to keep me from feeling like a drifting dandelion.

Under my bed was a monster of memories

Spilling plays, acts, and performances,

A stage of lost moments

To drift beneath my dreams.

I am from those moments-

Afraid before I hit the road-

I’m an unopened blossom fallen from the family tree.
