Where I’m From (Inspired By George Ella Lyon)

I’m from red, white, blue with a star

from famous adobo and exotic fruits!

I am from the sweetest mango under the shining sun.

(luscious, tangy, it tasted magical.)

I am from the tricycle food carts,

the creamy halo-halo whose divine foods I remember as if it was my own.

I’m from scorching hot days and sleeveless shirts,

from shorts and slippers.

I’m from the planting crops

And the pathway smelling like plants.

From burying seeds and growing!

I’m from a color

with a twist with a beautiful painting

And ten dazzling and colorful murals

I can do it myself.

I’m from loving parents and kindhearted people,

amazing friends and wonderful teachers.

From the moving here and there

to the losing of a loved one

Which used to keep me up at night.

Under my bed is a purple crochet bag

Spilling out fluffy pink, blue and violet skies

A sycamore tree of kind words

To drift beneath my dreams.

I am from those moments

Work before I play,

I am a dandelion clinging from the family tree.
