In early January of this year, 2023, my older Brother (Malcolm), my mom, my dad, and I, found out where we will be moving this summer. As a Military kid moving is a relatively common occurrence, every 3-4 years, but it is still very exciting, because 4 years is still a long time in one place. We were on a ski trip in Niseko, Hokkaido, Japan, at a small lodge that we were staying at that week. It was the morning, maybe 7:20 a.m., and my dad called me and my brother into his room and told us that they knew where we were moving. My brother was his normal prickly morning self, so he was very unenthusiastic, and not particularly interested. On the other hand, I was as excited as a sugar-crazed bunny, we were about to find out where we were moving. When we got to the room I promptly asked where we were moving, but they wouldn’t tell me. My parents had us play, 20 questions, a game that we had been playing at dinner the night before. 20 questions is a very straightforward game where you ask yes/no questions to find the answer, in this case it was my brother and I asking my parents about where we were moving.
I asked my mom if it was cold, she said, “Yes.” My brother asked her if it was in the United States, she said, “yes.” I asked if it was Seattle, and my mom said, “no.” My brother asked if it was in Alaska, and she said, “yes.” I was getting very excited, and I asked if it was Valdez, another “no.” I was extremely excited now because I knew exactly where we were going, “We’re moving to Juneau!!!” I exclaimed. My parents didn’t bother answering because I had not asked a question, we all knew. This move is one of the most exciting moves yet because I was born in Juneau, Alaska, but we moved away when I was barley 6 months old, but before I was born my family had been there for 8 years, so we have a lot of connections there, and it's almost like a home city to us.
