Life as a Military Child

Life as a military child may come as a challenge for many, having to leave your home, your friends, and your family may be difficult for a lot of military children. It’s always a challenge having to pack up your life and start fresh in a new state, country, and sometimes even starting a new life in a new continent. Having to move far from your friends and family is really hard because you're moving away from the people you love most with doubt in your mind that you’ll find friends just as good as your old ones. A lot of military children may find it hard to make strong connections with new peers as they could feel like they might not understand how their friends and family did before they moved away.

Many military children have experienced their parents having to go TDY (Temporary Duty Travel), parents may be gone for weeks, months, or sometimes more than a year. It can really affect a military child’s relationship with their parents. Long TDYs can lead military parents to miss important events that their child really cares about and it leads to a strained relationship between children and their parents. When parents go far away for long periods of time they might not be able to call or communicate with their family and children back home. When their parents go TDY far away from their family they might not have time to communicate with family members due to different time zones. The time can really affect when you can talk to your parents again because they are often busy from work and may only get a chance to talk to you at really late times.

Life as a military child isn’t always hard, at a young age you get to travel around the world to places you might have never even heard of before. This is a once in a lifetime experience that not many people get to experience at such a young age or even after growing up and becoming an adult. Military children get the chance to live in new places, learn new cultures and ways of living and get an opportunity to learn about life outside of their home country. Military children travel all the time and they always have a lot to look forward to, being a military child isn’t as bad as many might think because it opens up new ideas to children at a young age and presents them with more learning opportunities. Being a military child really isn’t always as bad as it may seem, military children can be extremely lucky because of the chances they get every time they move.

Life as a military child may seem tough and challenging but there is always a good outcome awaiting, moving shows more to learn, more to see, and a new way of thinking and living. Many adults don’t get to go to the places that military children do and military children are often very lucky for the opportunities they get. Life as a military child isn’t always a negative thing, if you look at it from the perspective of another child you may realize how cool it seems. Traveling around the world isn’t an experience every child gets and military children can be extremely lucky with the places they get to live and get to go to and experience. Life as a military child isn’t always a bad thing, you may find that you are really lucky to be a child of the military.
