Embracing Change

The dandelion has been designated as the flower of the military child. Like military brats, dandelions bloom and thrive anywhere the wind takes them. For the past 18 years, I have embraced this mindset. I have moved numerous times, each time finding new footing and thriving.

After a lifetime of constant moves and new places, my time as an active duty military kid is coming to an end. As the school year concludes, I will be graduating and leaving behind the life that I have known thus far. While this chapter of my life closes, there are certain aspects of being a military brat that I will carry with me forever.

Military life has shown me that nothing is permanent; change is inevitable. Being open to change and exploring new people and cultures allowed me to adapt to ever-changing situations and has helped me become well-rounded. While change can be scary, I have adopted the mindset that if you stay in one place, there is no room to grow.

The military has introduced me to people from all walks of life. I have made friends across the globe, all from different backgrounds, cultures, and religions. This has allowed me to remain open minded and has taught me not to judge a book by its cover. I have learned to respect cultures and beliefs outside of my own.

While this may be my last duty station, I will proudly carry the title “Military Brat” and the lessons I have learned on to my next adventure. As I say goodbye to this chapter of my life, I will take a piece of every person and place with me moving forward.
