Living Abroad as a Military Child

Living Abroad as a Military Child

By Luke

Being a military child is one of the coolest adventures that I am proud to be a part of. You get to explore new countries that you could not do by living in one place all the time. I am very lucky to have lived in two places in Europe. There are so many benefits to experience by living abroad. However, just because it is a very unique experience doesn't mean that it comes without hardships. From large separations to a language barrier, these examples show that it can be challenging living in a foreign country.

Getting to experience new countries and places is one of the best parts of living in Europe. For example, by car we are just 5 and a half hours away from Rome, 11 hours to Paris, and 12 and a half hours to Normandy. Some of the coolest things in the world that I could have only dreamed of going to see like the Colosseum, the Eiffel Tower, and where 133,000 troops landed on D-Day. Seeing these monuments has been as cool as anything I have ever done. I have loved going to not only these places but many others and I will never forget my experiences that I have had with my family.

One of the down sides of being a military child is having your parents go away for long periods of time. This happens a lot more when you are stationed in Europe because different units are in different parts of the country. It is very hard to see them go but with new technologies, thankfully we are able to call and facetime. Also, another downside is that we can’t visit very often with our extended family and friends because the long distances separate us. The sadness my heart feels is deep.

In conclusion, I am very grateful to be a military child that has been stationed in Europe. I feel that there are more positive than negative aspects of being a military child overseas and I am very excited to continue to travel and visit new places.
