The End of the World

They nearly disappeared.

Mimicking their own reflection.

Attacking white.

Gurgling black.

Gray.

Winter.

Summer-

A popular, colorful, adaptable song.

The animals colonize.

The animals survived.

Dogs barking,

Car alarms squealing.

Escape.

Repeat, many-tongued mimic

They nearly disappeared.

The End of the World is a poem about people who were left alive when the world ended and how they are trying to make a way of life. The first line “they almost disappeared” is how they almost died at the end of the world, but they found their gray area. As the animals survived and summer came around they were able to adapt to their new planet. They escaped from their negative mindsets that were left with them due to traumatic events. They continued to mimic the way of life as a way of “fake it till you make it.” The sounds of dogs barking are what they would hear at night because the dogs continued as if everything was normal and they would chase squirrels or birds all the time. The car alarms became a very familiar noise when the world “ended” since all the cars had their alarms going off and nobody could turn them off. The last line which repeats the first is a way of declaring victory, like they almost disappeared but they didn’t. They survived and they adapted to start a new generation of people.
