Cheery voiced, familiar visitors The Mockingbirds Sweet statebirds 50 years later, they had advanced Very territorial The Mockingbirds Swooping down on people or animals, pigs squealing Car alarms, wheels squeaking Attacking their own reflection, injuring themselves, The Mockingbirds Escaping prosecution Advanced halfway across the continent Disappeared from parts of the East Coast Familiar visitors to backyard feeders, The Mockingbirds
My poem is symbolism for entering adult hood. As one grows, they face harsh reality and change. They leave behind old customs, attitudes, personalities, and evolve into a new individual, whether positive or negative. “Sweet statebirds” with “cheery voices” begin to attack their own reflections and injure themselves. This signifies an individual’s conversion to stronger, deeper topics and actions as opposed to innocent ideals. Throughout all this change, however, the individual remains themselves, which is why I repeat “The Mockingbird.” Whether one’s 60 or 6, they are still themselves inside. My poem “Growing Pains” reflect’s one’s life journey and the changes that come with it.
