Through My Eyes

I was brought on a boat with my partner and we both knew what we were getting ourselves into. We had trained for months for this and I was ready, my job was to find people that were injured on the battlefield, or to find explosives. After a grueling time stuck with other dogs we finally made it to shore, it was nice to be able to touch the ground again. The humans were setting up camp while us dogs were scouting the area with our partners. All was going well until I smelt an explosive, that was a bad sign. I had alerted my partener, as he alerated “Guys, we found one!”.

As people came to defuse the explosive we continued our way, it was boring most of the time searching the area. When we got back to the camp it was already night, since we hadn’t eaten we got to eat while they made their beds that they were gonna be sleeping on. While that was happening us dogs had already finished eating and were just laying down trying to sleep. In total that day I found only two bombs out of the five that were found, that was an achievement to me or that is what I think. When we were trying to go to bed a new dog tried to take someone’s sleeping spot and that started a fight.

The rest of us just went back to bed when the young one straight up attacked an older one and it was not good. Since the older dog did have more experience it was able to take down the younger one. Though the younger one was bitten pretty bad though nothing serious that would cause him to get put down nor have to leave. When a handler came out, some dogs were fighting. He took the younger one to the medics since they could just banaged him up. Then we finally went to bed to start looking for traps or bombs.

We went on a path that our handlers told us to go, it was muddy to say the least. When we came across a bomb we were to put a marker right next to it, that was what the sergeant told the handlers. We were with some Marines to make sure that in an ambush we would live, I was fine with that, “All dog handlers a Private has gone missing report back to camp.” it was radioed through to everyone. Private James was a skinny boy that didn’t really make it past the training though he did. Since I was a dog usually used for tracking or finding I was sent out with some other dogs and Privates. My partner Lieutenant Pike was familiar with what Private James looked like.

After a while we had found him sleeping in the woods, and with all the people shouting his name he was still sleeping. Pike told me to bite him gently though strong enough that he would wake up. When Private James woke up he was in for a surprise since Pike had radioed where he was, which meant a sergeant was there. “Private Pike you can go now.”, as we left the Private was given a task that I couldn’t really hear them since we were far by then though the next day he was doing tasks.
