Where I'm From

I am from Cornhuskers

From the Tree Planters and the Land of Corn.

I am from the golden fields under the sun

It tasted like pumpkin pie.

I am from blueberry patches

The care of parents whose love I remember

as if they were my own.

I am from kimchi and ROK

From Sarah and Paul

I am from Minecraft

And the cooking

From “Hush!” and “Pipe down!”

I am from the Marshall Arts

With a swift kick

And ten moves I can do myself

I’m from Dandelions and small town

Big cats and strong winters

From the loud music lost to the sound cars

To the coop used to keep chickens

A purple shirt of comfort to drift beneath my dreams

I am from those moments -

forgotten before I remembered

I am a leaf growing from the family tree.
