“Military Brat”

They call me a “military brat”

But I didn’t ask for a life like that.

Moving boxes every year,

New schools, new streets, new kinds of fear.

Goodbyes come fast, and hellos slow,

Friends like season-come and go.

I’ve learned to smile through the pain,

Pretend I’m fine, again, again.

Mom or Dad in camo gear,

Gone for months-we miss them here

Birthdays, games, the times that pass,

Waving through a phone or glass,

This life is mine, both gift and test,

With restless nights and fleeting rest.

But still I rise, both brave and blue,

A soldier’s child-strong, and true.
