Constant Goodbyes

Every few years, we pack it all up,

New places, new faces, a new coffee cup.

I say goodbye, yet it’s never enough,

Finding friends in a world that’s very tough.

The streets might change, but the heart stays the same,

A military child, with no real claim.

I learn to smile, I learn to pretend,

That every goodbye won’t break me again.

But this time it’s different—it cuts more deep,

Someone I love is moving, and it’s hard to keep

The tears from falling, the ache from my chest,

When the one who knew me best leaves with the rest.
