Where I’m From (Inspired By George Ella Lyon)

I am from the Mother of Presidents,

From George Washington’s Monument and dogwood.

I am from the elegant tea houses under the ginkgo trees.

(air, pollution, it smelled of smoke).

I am from the Berlin Wall and

The Grimm Brothers fairy tales

Whose stories I remember

As if they were my own

I’m from a world of fantasies and mysteries,

From black and white keys and frets and strings.

I’m from the blooming dandelions and the

Painted landscapes,

From tall green trees and plants.

I’m from a watercolor world made

With a soft brush

And ten landscapes I can create myself

I’m from ramen and 떡볶이,

deafening airplanes and jets.

from friends lost

to the pencils and paper,

used to keep me happy.

Under my bed was a drawer

spilling a world of places,

a storage of memories

to drift beneath my dreams.

I am from those moments -

good times before I moved,

a dandelion seed fallen from the sky.
