Where I’m From (Inspired By George Ella Lyon)

I am from the Land of Horchata,

from the City of Fame, and the Warner brothers.

I am from my Dad getting called to the deployment of war.

Mango, pepper, it tasted like Mexican lollipops.

I am from the people traveling on big, strong, gray burros,

The long-lost friends whose pencils I remember

as if they were my own.

I’m from very expensive gas and gold mines,

from Kardashians and The Rock.

I’m from the bougie barber shops and the

screeching motorcycles,

from piers and venues!

I’m from Mickey, Minnie, and the gang

with a “Wish upon a star and your dreams come true.”

and ten rides I can go on myself.

I’m from Steph Curry and Clay Thompson,

Jordan Poole, and Andrew Wiggins.

From the Beats and games lost to the PCS

used to keep me losing money.

Under my bed was a dandelion vase

spilling purple water,

a taste of paint

to drift beneath my dreams.

I am from those moments -

when before I could walk-

I had fallen from the couch of greatness.
