Where I'm From

I am from The Lonestar,

From rodeo arenas and saltos mortales.

I am from the cactus under the sun,

It smelled like burritos with guacamole.

I am from tumbleweeds

The spaghetti bowls

Whose somersaults I remember

as if they were my own.

I am from Spanish and chili con carne

From the Alamo and cowboy culture

I am from Big Bend

And the sunny weather

From “Do your homework.” and “Stop being obnoxious!”

I am from the imagination

With a pen

And ten drawings I can create myself.

I'm from red grapefruit and canyons,

Southern hospitality and Dallas Cowboys.

From the Travis letter lost to the Alamo

To the stable used to keep horses.

Under my bed was a blue basket spilling bluebonnets,

An armadillo of prairies.

To drift beneath my dreams.

I am from those moments-

Moved before I turned 10.

I am a dandelion growing from the family tree.
