I am a military child. 42% of Army soldiers have children so there are many kids like me. In 2025, the Department of Defense recorded that there are approximately 1.6 million military children. Most military families live in civilian communities and 80% of them attend public school like me too.
As a military child, I only live somewhere for two or three years until moving for my dad’s job. When it is time to move, we have to say goodbye to our friends. Moving so often can cause stress and anxiety. Personally, it is hard on me and makes me sad because I lose touch with my old friends. I try to look forward to going to a new school and making more friends that are in my situation too.
Deployment is another hardship for a military kid. My dad goes far away and cannot come home to visit. Whenever he has free time, he always calls us. Whenever he’s deployed, I have mixed feelings. I’m excited because he’s going to help people, but I’m worried about what could happen. I always look forward to the coming home ceremony because I’ll be happy to see my dad again.
Life is a little harder being a miliary child, but I get to explore new places more often than most individuals. I also meet so many new people and can make friends everywhere I go. I hope all military kids are fortunate enough to see the good things like I do.
