Far from home

What is home?

Am I the everlasting fields of Europe,

quiet and endless in their reach

Am I the everchanging sunsets of North Carolina,

burning bright, then fading fast

Change is a familiar companion

Still, I long to retrace my steps,

to gather what was left behind

archiving echoes, memory by memory

Arriving anywhere, I feel fragile

Unfamiliar in each new place, I tremble

A chance to start again.

They ask, I respond

I am the girl from everywhere

I am a military brat

Hesitant, I ask once more:

Where to now, Commander?
