Sullivans Elementary School
When I was in 2nd grade at the Navy Hale Keiki School in Hawai'i, my Dad was gone a lot on submarines. Our class did a project in art where we read the book "Tar Beach" by artist Faith Ringgold and were asked to create our own story quilt and imagine where we might fly to, like the character in the book. I made a story quilt border and wrote that I imagined myself flying to my Dad's submarine and landing there when he was deployed. I missed my dad a lot in 2nd, 3rd and 4th grade! We moved to Japan in August 2023 from Hawai'i and now I am a 5th grade student at Sullivan's Elementary. My Dad is home more often now and I'm SO glad!
